Which Bell?

Bell built the helicopters most people picture when they hear the word: the Huey, the Jet Ranger, the 222 that became Airwolf. Their two-blade teetering rotor gives a scale model a distinctive slow rotor sound and a forgiving, stable hover, which is why Bell fuselages are so often a scale pilot's first.

At 450 and 470 size, Roban, FLISHRC and Flywing all make a Bell 206, and FLISHRC and Flywing offer the Huey with GPS stabilisation. Moving up, FLISHRC's 500-class Twin Huey and UH-1 are ready to fly, and Roban's 700 and 800-size ARF kits cover the 212, 222, 407, 412 and 429 for pilots who want a big civil or utility Bell on the flight line.

Several come in named liveries: the LAFD Jet Ranger, Thai Police and Air Ops 206s, rescue and military Twin Hueys.

206 Jet Ranger
The classic civil Bell. Available from all three makers at 450 size; the Flywing and FLISHRC versions are GPS-stabilised.
UH-1 Huey and Twin Huey
Military utility. The Flywing Huey V4 is the affordable stabilised option; FLISHRC's 500-class UH-1 and UH-1N come in several schemes.

The airframe Airwolf was based on. Roban's 800-size ARF, for pilots who want the civil version.
407, 412, 429 and 212
Roban 700 and 800-size ARF kits. The 412 and 429 use four-blade heads; the 212 and 407 are two and four-blade respectively. Club-field aircraft.

What is the best Bell 206 RC helicopter?
For a first scale helicopter, the Flywing Bell 206 V3 or FLISHRC Bell 206 Jet Ranger, both GPS-stabilised 450-class models. For conventional flybarless flying with more scale detail, the Roban 206 in 450 or 470 size.
Is the Huey a good scale helicopter to learn on?
Yes. The two-blade head is forgiving and the Flywing Huey V4 and FLISHRC UH-1 are both self-levelling with GPS hold.
Are the Roban Bell 412 and 429 ready to fly?
No, they are ARF kits in 700 and 800 size. You supply servos, flybarless controller, motor, ESC, receiver and batteries.
Do Bell models have the right rotor sound?
The two-blade models do. A scale Bell 206 or Huey at a realistic head speed produces the slow slap that makes the full-size aircraft so recognisable.
