Buying guide

Before you buy an 800

Large scale helicopters are where the hobby gets serious. An 800-size Roban Airwolf or Bell 412 has a rotor disc over 1.8 metres across, weighs several kilos ready to fly and sounds like a real helicopter when it passes. They are club-field aircraft, flown by pilots who already handle a 450 or 500 confidently.

Most of this page is Roban ARF: the fuselage, scale rotor head and mechanics are supplied, and you fit your own servos, flybarless controller, motor, ESC, radio and 12S battery. That means a build, but it also means you choose the electronics and you know every bolt in the aircraft.

FLISHRC's FL700 Tiger is the exception: a 700-class scale machine supplied ready to run with GPS stabilisation. If you want the size without the build, that is the one.

Budget the electronics
An ARF needs six to eight servos, a flybarless unit, a 700-class motor and 120A-plus ESC, a receiver and two 6S packs in series. Expect the electronics to cost as much again as the kit.
Somewhere to fly it
These are not garden aircraft. You will want a BMFA-affiliated club field, and most clubs will ask to see you fly something smaller first.
Transport and storage
An 800-size fuselage is around 1.6 metres long. Measure the car boot before ordering, and plan where it lives at home.
Multi-blade heads need care
Four and five-blade scale heads look superb but want conservative head speeds and smooth inputs. Set up the flybarless unit for scale flying, not 3D.
Questions

Before you buy

Not answered here? Email hello@rc-helicopters.co.uk and a pilot will reply.

What is included in a Roban ARF kit?
The painted fuselage, scale rotor head and blades, main mechanics, tail assembly, landing gear and hardware. You add servos, flybarless controller, motor, ESC, receiver and batteries. Some kits include scale lighting; the product page lists what is in the box.
How much space does an 800-size helicopter need?
A full-size flying field. The rotor disc is over 1.8 metres across and the aircraft covers ground quickly. It is a club-field machine, and your club's insurance will expect BMFA membership.
Can a beginner fly a 700 or 800?
No. Learn on a stabilised 450 or 500 first. The exception is the FLISHRC FL700, which is GPS-stabilised, but it is still a 700-class aircraft with a lot of energy in the rotor.
Do you deliver large helicopters?
Yes, boxed and tracked to UK addresses, free over £129.99. Very large or made-to-order models can take a little longer to dispatch; we tell you if that applies.
