Buying guide

RTF, RTR, PNB and BNF

Ready to fly (RTF) is the completion level that includes everything: the helicopter, assembled and set up, plus a transmitter, flight battery and charger. It is the right choice if this is your first helicopter or you do not already own a compatible radio.

Some listings say RTR (ready to run), which manufacturers use interchangeably with RTF. We have also included PNB and BNF models where the only thing missing is a transmitter, because many pilots already have one. Each product page states exactly what is in the box.

RTF does not mean toy. Several of the machines here are 500-class scale helicopters with GPS stabilisation and over a metre of rotor disc. They arrive flight-ready because the manufacturer did the setup, not because there is less to set up.

RTF and RTR
Complete. Helicopter, transmitter, battery and charger. Charge, bind and fly.
PNB and PNP
Plug and bind, or plug and play: electronics fitted, no transmitter. You bind it to a radio you already own. Check the receiver protocol matches.
BNF
Bind and fly: the same idea, usually with a specific receiver brand pre-installed. Spektrum BNF models need a Spektrum transmitter, for example.
What is not included
Even RTF boxes rarely include spare batteries. Flight times are typically five to eight minutes, so budget for a second pack if you want more than one flight per outing.
Questions

Before you buy

Not answered here? Email hello@rc-helicopters.co.uk and a pilot will reply.

Does RTF include the transmitter?
Yes. That is the definition. If a model is PNB, PNP or BNF the transmitter is not included and you bind it to your own.
Is an RTF helicopter a good first helicopter?
Usually, provided it is stabilised. Pick an RTF with a six-axis gyro or GPS and you have everything needed to learn. An RTF collective-pitch 3D machine is complete too, but it is not a beginner's aircraft.
Can I upgrade the included transmitter later?
On most models, yes. Flywing and FLISHRC helicopters accept a range of receivers, so you can move to a Radiomaster, FrSky or Spektrum radio and keep the helicopter. Our transmitter setup guide covers the common options.
What else do I need on day one?
A spare battery, somewhere legal to fly, and if the helicopter is over 250g, your CAA Operator and Flyer IDs. For outdoor models, a calm day helps.
