How to fly an RC helicopter: your first hover, step by step
Sticks, trims, throttle hold, the tail-in hover. The exact sequence that gets a total beginner off the ground safely — and the three mistakes that break blades in the first session.
Almost everything written about learning to fly an RC helicopter is either a shopping list or a timeline. Very little of it tells you what to actually do with your hands in the first hour, in what order, standing behind the machine with your thumbs on the sticks. This is that article. Follow it in sequence with a small trainer in still air and you will be holding a stable hover by the end of your second or third battery — without breaking anything expensive.
If you have not bought a helicopter yet, read your first RC helicopter first and start on a coaxial or a small collective-pitch machine indoors. If a word here is unfamiliar, the terminology glossary has it in plain English.
Before you spin the rotors
Five checks, every single time, before the blades ever turn. Skip them and your first "flight" becomes your first crash.
- Throttle stick fully down, throttle hold ON. Throttle hold is the switch that guarantees the motor cannot spin up. It stays on until you are ready. Know where it is before anything else.
- Battery secured, not just resting. A pack that shifts in flight shifts the centre of gravity and the helicopter fights you.
- Rotor blades bolted firm but able to pivot. Grab each blade at the root — it should be tight enough not to flop, loose enough to swing under its own weight. Both the same.
- Nothing and nobody within the blade radius plus three metres. Rotor blades at speed cut. Treat them like they will.
- Transmitter on first, helicopter second. Reverse when finishing. Always power the radio before the aircraft so the receiver never listens to a dead transmitter.

Step 1: stand behind the tail
Stand two to three metres directly behind the helicopter with its tail pointing at you and its nose pointing away. This is tail-in orientation and it is the only one you will use for the first several sessions. In tail-in, the controls match your view: push the cyclic stick left and the helicopter goes left, push it forward and it goes away from you. Every other orientation scrambles that mapping, which is why beginners start here and stay here.
Do not be tempted to stand to the side because it "looks cooler". Side-on and nose-in hovering are later problems. Master tail-in first.
Step 2: understand the two sticks
On a Mode 2 transmitter — the UK and US default:
- Left stick, up/down is throttle/collective. Up lifts the helicopter, down lowers it. On a collective-pitch machine this changes blade pitch; the effect from your seat is the same — it goes up or down.
- Left stick, left/right is the tail (rudder/yaw). It spins the nose left or right. You will barely touch it in a hover except to correct drift.
- Right stick is cyclic. Up/down tilts the helicopter forward/back; left/right tilts it side to side. This is the stick that keeps the helicopter over one spot.
Ninety per cent of hovering is tiny right-stick corrections and gentle left-stick throttle. That is the whole skill, repeated.
Step 3: spool up and find the lift-off point
Switch throttle hold OFF. Ease the throttle up slowly. The rotor spools to headspeed and the helicopter gets light on its skids — you will see it shuffle and settle. Keep easing up until it is just about to leave the ground, then hold there for a second. Feel where that point is on the stick. That is your hover throttle, roughly, and you will return to it constantly.
Do not jump the throttle. A fast throttle punch launches the helicopter a metre into the air before you are ready and the first correction you make will be a panicked overcorrection. Slow and progressive, every time.
Step 4: the three-inch hover
Your first goal is not a metre-high hover. It is to lift the skids three inches off the ground and set them straight back down. That is it.
- Ease throttle up past the lift-off point until the skids leave the ground
- The instant it lifts, it will start to drift — every helicopter does
- Make one small right-stick correction against the drift, then ease throttle back down and land
Do this fifty times. Lift, small correction, land. You are teaching your thumbs the muscle memory of takeoff and landing, which are the two moments most crashes happen. Staying low means every mistake costs three inches of drop, not a metre.
Step 5: hold it up for five seconds
Once lifting and landing feels controlled, hold the hover a little longer — five seconds, then ten. Keep it low, no more than knee height. Ground effect (the cushion of air the rotor pushes down and bounces off the ground) actually makes low hovering more stable, not less, so there is no rush to climb.
The rhythm to internalise: the helicopter is always drifting, and you are always making small corrections against it. A hover is not a still object; it is a continuous series of tiny pushes back to centre. New pilots wait for the helicopter to move and then react late and hard. Experienced pilots correct constantly and gently before the drift builds. Aim for the second thing from day one.
Step 6: hover for a full battery
The final first-stage goal: hold a controlled knee-height tail-in hover for a whole pack, correcting drift, holding roughly one spot on the ground. When you can do that on three packs in a row without a hard landing, you have learned to hover — the single hardest and most important skill in the hobby. Everything after this is easier.

The three mistakes that break blades
Nearly every first-session crash is one of these:
- Overcorrecting. The helicopter drifts, you slam the stick, it lurches the other way, you slam it back, and the oscillation grows until it hits the ground. Fix: smaller inputs than feel natural. Half of what your instinct says.
- Chasing the throttle. Fixating on height, pumping throttle up and down, ballooning and dropping. Fix: set a hover throttle and leave it; fly the cyclic, not the collective.
- Letting it get too high too soon. At head height a drift you cannot catch becomes a crash from a height that breaks blades and booms. Fix: stay under knee height until the hover is genuinely stable.
What speeds this up more than anything
A flight simulator. An evening a week on neXt or RealFlight with your own transmitter plugged in teaches the exact stick coordination above, with none of the crash cost. Most experienced UK pilots credit the sim with half their early progress. Do the sim on weeknights, the real machine at weekends, and you will halve the calendar time to a stable hover.
The other accelerator is a person. The whole thing in one paragraph
Stand behind the tail. Check throttle hold, battery, blades, and clearance. Spool up slowly, find the lift-off point, and lift the skids three inches before setting them straight down — fifty times. Then hold five seconds, then ten, then a full pack, correcting drift with small right-stick inputs and a steady throttle, never above knee height until the hover is solid. Do that and you have cleared the hardest hurdle in radio-controlled flight. Break it into those steps and it is not hard — it is just patient.
